What We Do
The tax director is responsible for pushing the available strategies to increase the incentives, credits and other tax-related accounting items that exist. You will also evaluate and review the existing accounting procedures, making sure they are accurate and compliant. Furthermore, you will be responsible for the management of quarterly and annual tax and regulatory preparation, as well as disclosures and submission. Finally, you will be responsible for the recruitment and retention of tax staff.
Work Environment
Tax directors generally work in an office environment during regular business hours. However, in tax preparation season (between January and April), frequent overtime may be required.
How to Become
Tax directors do a lot of writing, so this is a skill they must have. Additionally, they must comfortably interact with people of other departments, so they must have good communication and interpersonal skills. Finally, they must be very well-versed in mathematics.
Training & Certification Requirements
To be a tax director, you must hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting or taxation. Most employers now look specifically for people with a master’s, however. Furthermore, being a CPA will work in your favor.
