Introduction

Increasingly, the public’s trust in business and even the free market system as a whole is deteriorating. Big business in particular is suffering a lack of confidence from Americans. In a 2013 Gallup Poll only 22% of respondents stated that they had “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in big business. Many entrepreneurs are looking beyond the traditional market and taking their ideas (and their ideals) into a new business paradigm. Going even beyond the idea of a business with a conscience, entrepreneurs are looking to solve social problems in a sustainable way. Social enterprise is the answer – business with a cause – positioning entrepreneurs to act as agents of broad social change by running profitable businesses.
